Population Dynamics!
2 species of ground finch, Geospiza fuliginoas and Geospiza fortis, living in the Galapagos Islands display interesting variations in bill size. On the island of Santa Maria, inhabited by both species, the average bill depth of the G.fuliginosa is 8.1 mm while that of the G.fortis is 12.7mm.
When inhabiting separate islands, however, their average bill depths were 9.8 mm and 10.1 mm respectively. Explain how the concept of character displacement can account for these observations.
N/A
My explanation was that since both species of finches live in separate islands, that means that they may interact with different species, in which they are forced to compete with these species for the same resources.
I don't know if that answer is very good though...it seems vague.
Any suggestions? Thanks!
