Can ponderomotive force induce motion in neutral gas?

In summary, while ponderomotive force can accelerate particles of all charges in plasma, polarisation alone would not be enough to induce motion in a neutral gas.

Ponderomtive force is well known phenomenon, able to accelerate particles of all charges in plasma, but what about neutral gas? If we omit thermodynamics for a while and consider a perfectly non-ionizable gaseous dielectric, would polarisation be enough to induce motion in it?
Thanks for answers

PS: Not considering the motion due to heating the gas because of polarisation losses...

No, polarisation alone would not be enough to induce motion in a neutral gas. The reason for this is that the polarization of a dielectric does not create a force on the molecules of the gas, but rather creates an electric field in the space around them. This electric field can then create forces on charged particles, which can cause them to move, but there are no forces on the neutral molecules themselves.

Related to Can ponderomotive force induce motion in neutral gas?

1. What is ponderomotive force?

Ponderomotive force is a force that is exerted on particles in a medium due to the presence of an electromagnetic wave. It is caused by the interaction between the electric and magnetic fields of the wave and the charged particles in the medium.

2. Can ponderomotive force induce motion in neutral gas?

Yes, ponderomotive force can induce motion in neutral gas. While neutral gas particles are not affected by the electric field of the electromagnetic wave, they can still be influenced by the magnetic field, resulting in a net force that can cause motion.

3. How does ponderomotive force induce motion in neutral gas?

Ponderomotive force induces motion in neutral gas by causing a displacement between the positively and negatively charged particles within the gas. This displacement creates a dipole moment, which can then be affected by the magnetic field of the electromagnetic wave.

4. What are the applications of ponderomotive force in neutral gas?

Ponderomotive force in neutral gas has various applications, including plasma confinement and manipulation, laser acceleration of particles, and spectroscopy. It is also being studied for potential use in propulsion systems for spacecraft.

5. Are there any limitations to the use of ponderomotive force in neutral gas?

Yes, there are limitations to the use of ponderomotive force in neutral gas. One limitation is that the force is relatively weak and requires high-intensity electromagnetic waves to produce significant effects. Additionally, the particles in the gas must be able to respond to the force, which may not be possible in all types of neutral gas.
