Ball throws upward, find maximum height

In summary, when a ball is thrown upward with an initial velocity of 10m/s and neglecting friction, the maximum height of the ball can be determined by knowing the initial velocity and considering the acceleration of gravity. The mass of the ball is not needed in this calculation.

Homework Statement

You throw a ball directly upward giving the ball an initial velocity of 10m/s. Neglecting friction, what would be the maximum height of the ball? (Explain why you do not need to know the mass of the ball)

Homework Equations

not sure

The Attempt at a Solution

vi=10m/s d=?
not much of an attempt, i know

The ball has an initial kinetic energy, which is transformed into an increase in gravitational potential energy.

Max height occurs when vy equals zero.

so if v1 = 10 m/s , think wut would the speed be at maximum height , and remember there is always the acceleration of gravity [ down ] acting on all object thrown upward!

Related to Ball throws upward, find maximum height

1. What is the formula for finding the maximum height of a ball thrown upward?

The formula for finding the maximum height of a ball thrown upward is h = (v02 sin2 θ) / (2g), where h is the maximum height, v0 is the initial velocity, θ is the angle of projection, and g is the acceleration due to gravity.

2. How do you calculate the initial velocity of a ball thrown upward?

The initial velocity of a ball thrown upward can be calculated using the formula v0 = u cos θ, where v0 is the initial velocity, u is the initial speed, and θ is the angle of projection.

3. Is the maximum height the same for all angles of projection?

No, the maximum height of a ball thrown upward is different for different angles of projection. The angle of projection affects the initial velocity and the time of flight, which both play a role in determining the maximum height.

4. How does air resistance affect the maximum height of a ball thrown upward?

Air resistance can decrease the maximum height of a ball thrown upward. As the ball moves upwards, it experiences air resistance which slows it down. This results in a shorter time of flight and a lower maximum height.

5. Can the maximum height of a ball thrown upward be greater than the initial height?

Yes, the maximum height of a ball thrown upward can be greater than the initial height if the angle of projection is greater than 45 degrees. In this case, the ball follows a parabolic path and reaches a maximum height before falling back to the ground.
