Admissions Independent Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Math exams

This is a hilarious take on a serious matter! There's also another actor, the so-called Counsellor. I respect good counsellors, but I know many parents for whom the relationships with counsellors just did not work (mainly because they didn't help their Boopsies to get to the college they dreamed...

Absolutely. Any non-helicopter parent would do the same :-). I just want us to be better informed.

Admissions Independent Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Math exams

Sorry for the confusion. In my understanding the sports scholarships to a college (I called it sport-based admission which may not be a vernacular term) is really difficult. I have also heard that colleges do what is called "scouting" wherein sports personnel at the colleges try to catch the...

Admissions Independent Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Math exams

Oh, I understand. My son (who recently graduated from high school) did 6 APs and did well on them. He too is/was an independent learner. He has secured an admission to a very good college (starting in fall 2023). We have carefully documented all that process. Should there be interest, I can...

Admissions Independent Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Math exams

My daughter (14 years old) is considering to be an independent learner for her high school so that she can pursue her other (serious) interest in sports. Whereas she is focused on her sport, she also wants to study in a flexible environment, the basic sciences and math in both of which she is...

B Simple yet effective way to reliably control the DC Motor speed?

As a part of our physics high-school self-study, we are making a stroboscope. We have a small 5-V DC motor that powers the strobe disk. It works as expected, but, clearly, the motor makes the disk spin at a constant speed. Is there an easy, but effective and reliable way to control its speed...

B "Prove" that LPG burns with a blue flame ....

Should that be ##\frac{hc}{\lambda}##? You mean ##\lambda##. (Some minor edits for completeness. Thank you for your answer!)

B "Prove" that LPG burns with a blue flame ....

Thanks @vanhees71, but I guess I am trying to find out if what we see by eyes or measure by spectrometer could be in agreement with what we can calculate by using, e.g., conservation of energy.

B "Prove" that LPG burns with a blue flame ....

I can understand the strangeness of the question. I thought I accepted the strangeness of it by stating that there's nothing to prove: the eyes see a blue flame, therefore it must be blue light. But how do we verify it using equations and known values?

Spectrometer? But that is not household.

B "Prove" that LPG burns with a blue flame ....

The household LPG burns with a blue flame. There's nothing to prove! But what if we attempt to do that? How do we go about it? I started with the assumption that it is a complete combustion of the LPG. A Google search tells me that the calorific value (the amount of heat a substance gives off...

B Magnetic pendulum and electric energy....

True ;-). Wouldn't the button say "True" otherwise?

B Magnetic pendulum and electric energy....

While reading about electromagnetism from the OpenStax books with my son (and doing some experiments), he asked this question. Suppose I hang a pendulum and make it oscillate inside a coil connected to a Galvanometer as shown in the schematic diagram: Hopefully the image is clear enough. His...

I Help Designing a Resonance Box for Tuning Forks

I got these tuning forks from someone. However, I do not have the resonant box for amplification of the sound. I decided to get it made so that I can experience the fundamental frequency (and other harmonics) more clearly. I am planning to provide this design. In summary, the box would be...

I Theoretical maximum efficiency of a heat engine without Carnot

Through an intriguing fictitious dialog between Sadi Carnot and Robert Sterling, Prof. Israel Urieli of the Ohio University shows that it is not required to invoke entropy, the second law of thermodynamics, and the Carnot cycle with the [ideal] adiabatic processes in order to find out the...
