Is it like, under static equilibrium(unbiased) the minority carriers WON'T diffuse to the junction and get sweeped away by the junction and form a current simply because of the attraction from its parent silicon atom. But when an external voltage is applied (reverse bias), the minority carriers...
I went through the books again and the diffusion of minority carriers is not discussed under the PN junction. There isn't any reason for it to occur in a diode unless it is unevenly heated or something.
Also after more thinking i think the equilibrium is static or else the width of the junction...
It is said in the book 'Solid State Electronic Devices' by Ben G Streetman (page no.172) to ASSUME that there is NO electric field in the neutral regions.
Also since V=Q/4ΠΣr the potential should be present both inside the junction and in the Neutral region since 'r' can be taken in either...
So you are saying the CONSTANT potential in the NEUTRAL regions is due to the charges in the NEUTRAL region itself?
If so how does the neutral n region which has more electrons than the neutral p region have a Postive potential compared to the p region ?
I have attached a photo showing the...
Homework Statement
We are considering an UNBIASED junction.[/B]
I've read in a textbook that electric field created in the junction STOPS diffusion BUT in the same text its written the drift and diffusion currents cancel each other.
1. Does the diffusion and drift currents occur simulataneously...
Homework Statement
It is said that the potential in the neutral regions of a PN junction diode is CONSTANT.
Homework Equations
V=Q/4ΠΣr
The Attempt at a Solution
It is said in all textbooks to ASSUME that the electric field in the neutral regions as zero.
Two aspects confuse me.
1. What...
Homework Statement
The figures showing the potential variation inside a PN junction normally shows the potential to be constant in the neutral P and N regions
Homework Equations
V=Q/4ΠΣr
The Attempt at a Solution
Since the potential due to the positive and negative charges should also exist...
Homework Statement
Its said that there is no Net current in a PN junction under equilibrium as the drift and diffusion currents cancel each other.
We are talking about a Step junction at equilibrium.
Homework Equations
Its just a qualitative analysis.

Homework Statement
1. We are considering a step junction at equilibrium(no external voltage applied).
2. The potential variation is shown as negative potential at P region(which is shown as constant) and increasing through the transient region to become positive in the n region.
